Robotics Engineer: Work, Practice, Qualification, Training & Salary

A specialist in electronics, mechanics and automation, the robotics engineer creates robots that will be used for any type of task.

Robotics Engineer @AIMAGNUS

Main activities
The robotics engineer designs, programs, develops and maintains robots and robotic systems that will be used mainly by industry (automotive, electronics, chemistry...) and the medical sector, but also by agriculture, construction or logistics. He can also work on the design of personal robots(toys, vacuum cleaners,...).

How does he work ?
Depending on his specialization, the robotics engineer will be able to work on the structure of robots, that is, their electronic or mechanical systems, or on their automation. When working on the design of a robot, he begins to get acquainted with the specifics required and the tasks to be performed. According to the needs identified, it defines the technological solutions to be used and establishes specifications specifying the technical specificities necessary for its manufacture of the robot. Once the prototype is completed, it then participates in the development and implementation of tests and validation tests. It may also be required to intervene for robot installation, adjustment or maintenance operations.

Where does he practice ?
Today, robotics engineers work mostly in university research centres or small companies specializing in robotics. But there are also growing opportunities in industry : in the automotive, aeronautical, defence, transport, etc. sectors, employment opportunities are numerous in Ile-de-France. The region has a rich fabric of start-ups and innovative SMEs, as well as leading research organisations, in the field of robotics.

Skills to be a robotics engineer

Required qualifications

Versatile :
The profession requires the mastery of multiple scientific and technical knowledge : mathematics, computer science, electrotechnical mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics ... a good command of English is also necessary.

Choosing my training to become a robotics engineer
You can access the profession of robotics engineer with a diploma of level bac + 5.

Initial training

To become a robotics engineer, you can prepare an engineering degree with a specialization in automatic, robotics, mechatronics, or electronics.

The supply of training in these areas is rich. In Ile-de-France, examples include the Diploma of engineering specialty mechatronics from ISTY (Vélizy-Villacoublay, in apprenticeship), the Diploma of engineering specialty robotics from Polytech Sorbonne (Paris), or the Diploma of Engineering from ENSTA Paris Tech (Palaiseau).

Admission to the engineering cycle, for a period of three years, is made by competition after a PREPA (in particular MPSI or PCSI) or by title (L2/ L3, BTS or DUT in science or technology). Some of these schools have an integrated prep school, recruiting at the baccalaureate level (notably bac s or STI2D).

You also have the opportunity to opt for a university course, preparing a master's degree in automation, robotics, mechatronics, or electronics. This Diploma is obtained in two years after a bachelor's degree or in one year after a master 1 in the field of Science and technology.

In Ile-de-France, there are for example the master of Science for engineering specialty advanced systems and robotics( UPMC), the master of electronics, electric energy, automatic industrial robotic course (University of Evry) or the master of electronics, electric energy, automatic robotic course, assistance and mobility (UVSQ).

After obtaining the engineering diploma or the master's degree, you can continue your studies with a specialized master's degree (in 1 year) or a doctorate (research-oriented Diploma, in 3 years minimum).

Continuing training

Active professionals can train themselves in the course of their careers, in order to develop new skills, specialize or evolve in their profession. Short or long courses, such as master's degrees, are offered by specialist bodies, universities or engineering schools.

Persons wishing to reorientate to the profession of robotics engineer may, subject to justifying the required qualification criteria, prepare an engineering degree or a master's degree through continuing training in the field of automation, robotics, mechatronics, or electronics. The Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) also offers a master's degree in mechatronic and robotic systems.
